In the game, players control virtual avatars (Toons) and work together to fight the evil Cogs, who want to turn Toontown from a silly, wacky, fun-filled utopia into yet another corporate venture. In this article I would like to share with you how we discovered the problem with performance profiling, and how we solved the issues with the oldest tricks in the book: Doing things ahead of time, and using the right data structure for the job. Recently, we spotted and refactored a heavily-used code path, executed over 130k times a day, and resulted in a ~50,000x speedup.
